Upcoming clinic in Jamaica April 16th - 26th, 2009

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

It is that time again. We will be back in Jamaica April 16th - 26th, 2009 providing medical care in Falmouth, Jamaica, and Nine Miles, Jamaica. We have 14 providers attending including 7 doctors, 1 dentist and 6 medical students. In addition to the medicines that we have purchased, we have received a generous donation of medicines from Americares (www.americares.org). This included many of the important medicines we use to treat high blood pressure, arthritis and allergies to name just a few conditions. We anticipate treating about 300 patients at the clinic in Falmouth in addition to another 200-300 patients in Nine Miles. One of the most exciting parts of this trip will be the additional time we are spending in the rural Nine Miles area as we are slowly transitioning from a one day health fair there to providing more frequent care. We have been partnering with the Bob Marley Group of Companies (  http://www.bobmarley-foundation.com/) and U.R.G.E. (http://www.ziggymarley.com/urge-bulletins.php) to expand the holistic medical services available to that community. Are you a health care professional interested in a future trip? ICI Jamaica Medical Mission Oct 2008

What a successful trip!

Not only did we continue with the busy clinic in Falmouth, Jamaica, but we also expanded our work in Nine Miles, the birthplace of Bob Marley, and are one step closer to establishing ongoing medical services in that rural community. The clinic in Falmouth saw us treating over 300 patients for a wide variety of medical conditions (diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, skin infections and minor surgeries to name a few) as well as providing comprehensive dental services (cleanings, fillings, extractions and even root canals) to over 40 patients.

At our rural health fair in Nine Miles we partnered with the Bob Marley Group of Companies, the Ministry of Health and Peace Corps volunteers to perform blood pressure & blood sugar screening, adult & pediatric doctor visits, health education, dental services, home visits and rapid HIV tests. We now have a dedicated doctor’s office, treatment rooms, storage facilities and running water on site to help further our goal of ongoing medical care to this community.

In addition to our partners we would like to thank Americares, The Medical Terrace Pharmacy, the family & friends of Ethel Green, the French family & friends and all those who attended our last fundraiser. Without your support we would not have been able to purchase, acquire and distribute the medicines to run our clinic.  We would also like to thank Sonosite for helping us purchase a beautiful portable ultrasound unit so that we can help diagnose and treat more complicated cases.

The photos on the side of the blog are courtesy of Andrew Pachon and show both our medical work and the beauty of Jamaica itself. Our next medical mission to Jamaica is April 17th-27th, 2009. If you would like to see how you can be a part of the work we do please contact us through the contact page of the website or the comments section of this blog.
